65 year old grandmother bicycling across Canada! Ms. Karen I. Smith, mother of five and grandmother of two, turned 65 in February and headed west in June to start the first leg of her bicycle adventure across Canada.

Reading your blog and enjoying it so much I am not getting my spinach soup made from my latest de- tox cookbook or a beef stew from out of my head.
I found you in my research," cycling across Canada". I started last year on my 65th birthday and crossed B.C. This years birthday on June 4th, I want to cross Alberta.
I am interested in your route, and the # of kms. per day you travelled. I travel between 25 and 35 km a day. Shelter of some kind is important to me at those distances for safety.I want to see Drumheller but wondering if that needs to be an excursion separate from traveling west to east. I will be traveling from Hamilton, Ontario by Via Rail. I think the nearest stop to the B,C border is Jasper so I will likely begin my trip from Jasper. If you have any words of wisdom from your experience I would love to hear from you.
I alternate between being frugal and needing a little luxury. Hostels and camping are fine and often desired but so are B@B's and motels sometimes.
If you can make time for a reply with your busy schedule I would appreciate it so much.

Hi, Norine, I wonder if this email will really reach you. Jasper is directly west of Edmonton. It will be VERY hilly. I walked up most of them because they go sometimes for one to four km. I started at Edmonton. You could get to Drumheller by going diagonally southeast. Eventually you'll get to flatter country. Every single western town/village has a camp ground, & the folks are as friendly as east coasters. They honk 'Hello' & pull out into the other lane to pass. Many times I didn't have to pay - being old, maybe, & being on a bike. Wish I was coming with you but if I get a chance to get away again this summer I have to do Nfld. Haven't seen it yet, though as a teen I lived in PEI. Keep in touch if you wish. fieldofcedars@hotmail.com Stop at libraries where it's free to blog & check emails. I wore my pants insideout for better comfort. I packed too much but mailed a lot home on the 3rd day. Drink lots of water. May the wind be at your back, as for days in the prairies you may get easterlies instead of westerlies. Happy Bday Jn. 4th. Karen
