I had planned to leave early on my bike on Monday, Aug. 11/08, but 4 days of rain were scheduled by then so I decided only on Monday morning to leave off cycling any further.
They drove me to the gas station in Glenboro so I could meet the Greyhound to Winnipeg, but the bus on this route was too small to take my bike.
Piet and Lorelie offered immediately to drive me to the Via in Winnipeg, a 3 hour drive, and would not let me buy the gas. I am so grateful to them and to my higher power, as the rain later on was that cold teeming kind of rain. It would have been dreadful.
We passed four cyclists that day, on that secondary highway, #2.
The Via wasn't scheduled until next day, so they drove me to the Fort Garry Hotel, and I took a room there just 2 blocks from the train station.
I treated them and myself to a buffet lunch in the revolving restaurant above the hotel. From up there one has a great view of Winnipeg, and its legislature, and the statue of Golden Boy sitting atop a nearby building.
In the afternoon, I went over and checked my bags for the train next day, and just dawdled the day away, until supper at the Fort Garry in exclusive surroundings, in my pauper's clothes. Boy, what I get away with. After supper, I just went up and watched TV. I had a tiny room with a twin bed, high, and narrow just like my own. It came with a featherbed, almost too soft after having been on the ground since July 11th. Really quality furnishings. I would recommend the Fort Garry highly.
